As a fan of Howard Stern, I've been known to giggle at his writer Richard Christy's cropped and spliced versions of celebrity audio books. Probably my favorite being Bill Clinton saying, "Monica Lewinsky had a dry hole." Another classic is George Takei declaring, "I love black wang." Yeah, they are silly, immature, and rude, but again, they are mildling amusing, aren't they? Unfortunately, Dolly Parton is not finding humor in the edit of her audio book.
Last week, Howard played a creation of Christy's where Dolly says some pretty raunchy and racist things in reference to Johnny Carson, Kenny Rogers, and Linda Ronstadt. Turns out, Dolly doesn't appreciate it. She has issued a statement hinting at a lawsuit:
"I have never been so shocked, hurt and humiliated in all my life. I cannot believe what has done to me. In a blue million years, I would never have such vulgar things come out of my mouth. They have done editing or some sort of trickery to make this horrible, horrible thing. Please accept my apology for them and certainly know I had nothing to do with this. If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it's going to be over this. Just wanted you to know that I am completely devastated by this."
A lawsuit is bound to go nowhere, and I suspect this will blow over. I wouldn't even be surprised if Howard rubs elbows with her at some point in the future with his fashionable, celebrity lifestyle. Unfortunately, I expect this scuffle to make our funnyman even more soft and PC that he has become recently. There's a cost to summering in the Hamptons. You have to feel comfortable being in the company of other celebrities, preferably those who don't hate your guts.
